Joe Biden has announced Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate for the presidential election to be held in November. Several reports have described this announcement as historic. This marks the first time, a woman of color, both from a Black and Indian descent would be on a major party ticket.
Recall that Kamala was the only graduate of a historically black college and university that contested in the Democratic primaries. During her campaign then, she incorporated in her campaign what she termed “the next major planks in her black agenda.”
Kamala’s Proposal
Kamala had planned to invest $60 billion in science, technology, engineering and math education at historically black college and universities. In a campaign fact sheet released by her team, she stated that: “With access to proper resources, HBCUs and other MSIs (minority serving institutions) can be hubs of activity for STEM research and learning.”
The campaign fact sheet further added that “we can create a pipeline for ensuring that Black Americans are leading the research and entrepreneurship to grow our innovation economy and participate in the wealth that it generates.”
Her initiative showed passion about reducing the wealth gap among Black Americans. This proposal would have bolstered the Black economic infrastructure; while also allocating to Black business owners a sum of $12 billion in funding.
With the huge increase in the number of Black women-led startups, there is very high chance that with Senator Kamala Harris, being Biden’s VP elect, she would probably bring back to the table this proposal, which would be of immense benefit to Black entrepreneurs.
The proposal would give Black owned businesses a boost. And of course, there would be sufficient funding for these businesses to thrive.
We can say Kamala’s candidacy as Biden’s VP elect could be a blessing in disguise for African-Americans. However, only time can tell. For now, we can only keep our fingers crossed!
