Junior Ezeonu is an inspiring young man, passionate about improving the lives of every Grand Prairie resident. His working stints as a retail store clerk, youth basketball trainer, and being a substitute teacher and tutor for low-income students across the DFW metroplex, has provided him with the experience to understand what many people face in Grand Prairie.
These experiences stirred up the urge for public service in him. Junior strongly believes that with the right leadership, Grand Prairie has all it takes to be prosperous. He believes that efforts should be geared to increase funding for public schools; attention should be paid to the healthcare system, which has been badly hit by the pandemic, COVID-19, while also keeping an eye on infrastructure development.
In his personal website, Junior Ezeonu outlines his plans for Grand Prairie, under three basic themes as detailed below;
Healthcare
- I will also push to increase the number of city-wide free COVID-19 testing sites by partnering with both private and public entities, as well as increased accessibility to the COVID-19 vaccines for those who want them.
- As a result of social isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic many of our residents are suffering and would benefit from increased access to mental health services. I will fight to increase funding for these programs.
Public Schools
- I will work with the school board and other local entities to increase funding for Public Schools.
- Public Schools bridge the gap between the privileged and the underserved.
- Public schools allow each and everyone of us to have the opportunity to make it in the world, and we must continue to commit to our promise of sustaining and improving them so no child gets left behind.
Infrastructure
- No resident of Grand Prairie should have to deal with potholes all over their street no matter the wealth or affluence of their neighborhood.
- Every road in Grand Prairie must be in good standing regardless of its location on our map. Doing this will maintain the beauty of our city while attracting tourism and businesses.
- I will also work to find solutions that will lead to reductions in toll road fees.
UPDATE
On May 1, 2021, an election was conducted for terms that will be ending in May 2021. And a runoff election of the top two candidates for District 6 and 8 was held on June 5, 2021.
Kurt Johnson, who won with 53.4% of the votes in the run-off, won the city council district 6 seat, and Steve “Junior” Ezeonu with 51.2% of the votes, won city council district 8 at large seat. This implies that Ezeonu was elected not just by his district but city-wide,.
Interestingly, Grand Prairie will have two Black city council members serving at the same time for the very first time in the city’s over 100 years of existence.
